In 2002, I was feeding my infant son a bottle while watching the evening news. I was focused on his sweet little face and not the TV. Then I hear it--my words on a commercial. Ones I'd pulled together from research I did for a marketing class pitch competition during my MBA. We'd won and I got my 'A' for helping the nonprofit. But, I never dreamed they'd use my script to cast and produce the commercial I'd developed.
That was the day I became a marketer.
It would take 6 more years before I'd have marketing in my title, but that was the day my identity changed. I became a continuous learner of marketing. Today, I'm certified with Pragmatic Marketing in Product Management and Product Marketing. I recently got certified with the Product Marketing Alliance. I'm even an author--soon to be published in a book which helps Content Entrepreneurs with their long-term marketing strategy.
Yet, the best marketing book I ever read was Play Bigger on what the authors call Category Design. I was instantly hooked and have expanded on their frameworks for category creation to use with my clients and companies since 2016.
